R.I.P. Yasmin Ahmad

We should mourn or at least pray for her passing on 25th July 2009 (51 years old). Yasmin Ahmad was a critically-acclaimed multi-award winning film director, writer and scriptwriter. Her productions were such as Sepet, Gubra and the ever famous Petronas Merdeka advertisements we all used to. Not only was she famous in Malaysia, she was also famous in Singapore. Her latest creations Family(2008) and Funeral (2009) were for the Singaporean Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. I just love her Sepet and Gubra. Both made me cry sooo hard. They were both about how a chinese guy and a malay girl fell in love with each other. Practicaly all her movies and ads crossed cross-cultural barriers. Sepet is the 1st movie and followed by Gubra. There was an amusing scene in Sepet where Orked (Sharifah Amani) met Jason (Choo Seong Ng) in a chinese kopitiam and there was a stall selling chicken rice and char siu, and guess what was Orked's reaction, as a Malay, as she walked pass the char siu. She actually inhaled a whole gulp of char siu air and exclaimed something like "whoa..wo xi huan!" Lol.. They both are a must-watch and cried about. Lol.. Sigh~ we have definitely lost a great talent, one that could hold us, Malaysians consisting of different cultures and races. My deepest condolences to Yasmin Ahmad's family. Indeed, God loves her more. May you rest in peace. You will always be remembered. Life is really too short to hold back.

Fellow director Othman Hafsham, when met at the funeral, was effusive in his praise for Yasmin.
“She is a director who speaks her mind and her films reflect this,” he said.

But more importantly, she turned her views into actions. So we would, I imagine.
